Down Payment Assistance in North Carolina
The North Carolina Housing Finance Agency has assisted thousands of North Carolinians in purchasing homes with an array of financing options that make buying a new home affordable. Our NC Home Advantage Mortgage™ offers down payment assistance up to 3% of the loan amount that can help first-time and move-up buyers get into a new home.
First-Time Home Buyer Assistance in North Carolina
First-time buyers (those who have not owned a home as their principal residence in the past three years) and military veterans may be eligible for other products as well. The NC 1st Home Advantage Down Payment offers $15,000 in down payment help that may provide a better boost for new buyers than the other down payment options available with the NC Home Advantage Mortgage™. Or, these buyers may qualify for the NC Home Advantage Tax Credit, which can save up to $2,000 in federal taxes each year for buyers who apply and are approved for a Mortgage Credit Certificate prior to their home purchase. (This can be combined with the NC Home Advantage Mortgage™ but not the NC 1st Home Advantage Down Payment.)
Community Home Buying Programs
We also work with local nonprofits and government agency to offer down payment assistance through our community home buying programs. If you are buying a home and your income is below 80% of your county’s median income, you may be eligible for up to 25% of the sales price in down payment help (maximum loan of $50,000) through our Community Partners Loan Pool. You may also receive home buying help through our Self Help Loan Pool, which provides zero interest, shared mortgage financing to help eligible low- and moderate-income buyers.
